Kort om Knivsta

Knivsta är en tätort i Uppland och centralort i Knivsta kommun (Sveriges nyaste kommun), Uppsala län. Orten ligger vid järnvägen 48 km norr om Stockholm och 18 km söder om Uppsala, ett par kilometer väster om motorvägen E4 vid sjön Valloxen.

I Knivsta tillverkades tidigare träflis. På området där ortens sågverk tidigare låg projekteras nu (2007) ny bostads- och affärsbebyggelse. I Knivsta finns ett litet centrum med bibliotek, banker, affärer, några restauranger och kaféer samt en järnvägsstation. I anslutning till Knivstas centrala delar finns också en sport- och simhall. Kommunen brukar bedömas som expansiv med en omfattande inflyttning, främst till det närliggande Alsike. Många av de boende pendlar till Uppsala, Stockholm eller Arlanda.

Knivsta gamla kyrka, eller Sankt Stefanskyrkan, från tidigt 1300-tal ligger strax söder om samhället.

Berömda personer från Knivsta är framförallt konstnären Carl Milles (född vid Örby Gård Lagga, fader var Emil "mille" Andersson). Milles staty, invid Lagga kyrka se spelande ängel för moderns grav . I Knivsta samhälle verkade tonsättaren Emil Sjögren, och konstnären och skalden Olof Thunman efter vilken Knivstas största skola, Thunmanskolan, är uppkallad. Thunman skrev bland annat sången Vi gå över daggstänkta berg. Sportprofilen Gösta "Knivsta" Sandberg kom också från Knivsta och var landslagsman för Sverige inom bandy, fotboll och ishockey under 1950-talet och 1960-talet. Senare under 1900-talet har många ishockeyutbildade från Knivsta IK utvecklats till framgångsrika spelare både hemma i Sverige såsom proffsspelare.
